number 5 collaborate.

I wish more people new about the power of riffworks rifflinks. It's so cool being able to collaborate with musicians anywhere without being next to them.

That really makes sense. To aim mastering certain piece or talent, you have to dedicate even 2hours per day to develop it. I appreciate that.

Great thoughts, squint! I also often start with a drum part, especially a loop (since that requires no programming or effort on my part).

I totally appreciate and see the validity of your 2 hours per day approach and your thoughts about why that works.

Thanks for sharing your experience!

Great post!

In addition to the things you listed, starting with some kind of drum/rhythm track that has varied sections somehow seems to help me get songs written. I find that doing basic drum rhythm first and then adding music later is easiest for me. Then I can go back and fine-tune the drums, so to speak, but usually, the music I come up with fits the rhythmic parts (and vice versa) pretty well already. (Sometimes I “match” up old melodic ideas with new rhythmic parts, I suppose, and sometimes that works just as well.)

A sure-fire way for me to get nothing done is to wait until I feel inspired to work. I have to “write through” lack of inspiration to get to the inspiration.

Oh, and when I’m writing, I make sure that come hell or high water, I get in 2 hours per day (or more). I’ve thought about making a certain amount (time-wise) of music per day, but sometimes it’s 2 hours of figuring out one line of lyrics, that, when I do figure it out, it “enables” the rest of the song to happen somehow. Or it’s 2 hours of figuring out how a chorus flows into a bridge and then back into the chorus again. So, some days I may not add on any length to a track, but I may solve some problem that needed to be solved in order for the song to progress. If that makes sense.
