Line6Piper (aka Matt Piper) discusses a few of the new features he has been enjoying in Propellerhead Record 1.5. Matt is the in-house Propellerhead Product Specialist at Line 6, and the author of the acclaimed instructional guide, Reason 4 Ignite.
The latest update of Propellerhead Record (version 1.5) has some great new features that I’ve been enjoying, so I want to mention a few of my favorites here.
First of all, I am digging the Neptune Pitch Adjuster and Vocal Synth. This is a great tool, and quite fun, easy, and inspiring to use. Didn’t even have to consult the owner’s manual to figure this one out. Besides giving me the extra technological push to be able to self-produce vocals and harmonies that I can be confident enough of to share with others, I can also correct the occasional fretless bass note that might have strayed from pitch. And there is no denying that it is super fun to play live keyboard lines and control my vocal pitch that way, and play keyboard chords and make instant vocal harmonies. Super cool!
Since Record’s release last September, 2009, one of the things about the software that people have been buzzing about is the quality of the time stretching. Besides being extremely easy to use, everyone I demo it for is amazed by the range of time stretching available, the natural sound and lack of digital artifacts, and the stability during on-the-fly ridiculous tempo jumps. Record 1.5 takes it a step further by including the welcome addition of a new feature: Time stretching of individual audio clips. Now I can [alt] + click and drag the edge of individual audio clips to stretch or compress them to any length, with the time stretching accordingly for that clip. If I have a part that wasn’t played to a click (but that hopefully was played with good relative timing), it’s easy to align it to the grid. It’s fun to use it for freaky super-stretched effects as well.
Blocks is a new view in the Record 1.5 sequencer, and it is included in Reason 5 as well. I often enjoy looping a section and adding layers just to that section and building a track that way. Now I can do that in the Blocks view, name that block “bangin’ loop 1″ (or whatever), and then go back to the Song View. Then, when my Pencil Tool is selected, I can choose “bangin’ loop 1″ from the Blocks drop-down menu, and draw it in anywhere in the song I like, without ever having to copy and paste. And even if that block is used ten times in the song, if I go back and edit it a bit in the blocks view, those changes will be automatically made everywhere throughout the entire song where that block has been used. I can also make blocks for chorus, verse, etc. I can record a long live jam in the song view, find sections I like and turn those into blocks as well.
Of course, I really love the combination of Record 1.5 and the new Reason 5– but I’ll tell you all about my experience with the new features in Reason 5 in another post coming soon!
